Pormpuraaw State School has a culture of care and of high expectations, inside and outside the classroom.

  • All students at school every day, learning every day.

  • All students can achieve high academic results.

  • Explicit teaching practices within the school enhance the learning climate and tone.

  • Feedback for learning is valued and practised at all levels.

  • Student behaviour is tracked on the ‘Step and star chart’ in every classroom.

Curriculum delivery is underpinned by highly effective explicit teaching using the Australian curriculum.

School leaders actively coach and support teachers in their skill development.

School classes cater for children aged four to twelve with the pre-prep and prep building located on the school grounds. The school building is a two story complex with four teaching areas, three curriculum resource rooms and a preparation room upstairs. The library, computer laboratory and administration area, staff room and the principal's office are all on the lower ground. The school is structured in a multi-age model where students from different age groups are grouped together.

The pre-prep classes run until 12.30 pm while the prep class runs for the full school day. The school has excellent facilities with two undercover play areas and a tuckshop. Technology features strongly, with every classroom fitted with an electronic whiteboard. There is also a computer lab, two class sets of laptops, a set of DS machines and BeeBots in abundance.

The seven-hectare grounds are being beautified and developed. The children have established a citrus orchard and market garden, the product of which supplements lunches served at the tuckshop. The school tuckshop serves two meals per day to children whose parents have signed up to pay for the nutrition program. Approximately 80 children are currently provided two meals a day. The main meal is at 11.15 am and a snack is provided at 1.15 pm. Children who are not enrolled in the fee-paying nutrition program bring their own lunch.
